#3535: Nongshim Tonkotsu Ramen Premium Noodle Soup - United States

This one was sent by Nongshim America – thanks again! Tonkotsu is a Japanese style ramen, usually a creamy pork rich broth. This one is boasting an added spiciness which sound interesting. Not only that, it’s a microwavable variety. Let’s see how it tastes!

A wet spicy sauce.

Loose bits inside the bowl.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, spring onion, Lao Gan Ma Spicy Chilli Crisp, nanami togarashi, barbecue pork, egg, sesame seed, and pickled ginger. Oh man – we got a winner here. Noodles came out of the microwave just right – just wonderful. The broth though. It’s a very rich and luxuriant spicy tonkotsu – perhaps one of the most agreeable I’ve ever tasted. Great noodles, fantastic broth. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 031146053414.

The Ramen Rater's Top Ten Instant Noodle Bowls Of All Time 2020 Edition

Bowls, cups, , trays, packs, and boxes. Well, I haven’t done a list of boxed or tray-style instant noodles – maybe that will come soon. But I think that separating these is important. The experience that a cup is meant for is different than a cup or bowl. Cups are more for a snack on the go, packs for when you’ve got a stove, and bowls are, well, for lunch. Although in the finished shots of these you’ll see them plated here, generally people will be looking at the bowl they came in, possibly using the plastic fork they came with, and tossing everything once they’re done. These are my favorites, current as of review #3545. Let’s have a look at The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodle Bowls Of All Time 2020 Edition.

#10 – Ve Wong Dah Wei Wong Artificial Premium Garlic Pork Flavor – Taiwan

The Ramen Rater's Top Ten Instant Noodle Bowls Of All Time 2020 Edition

To me, one of the most important things in scoring an instant noodle is whether or not it tastes like it is claimed to in the title of the product. This one comes with a good noodle, and a broth that’s just wonderful. It has the taste of stewed pork and garlic. It’s milky and just works so well. What’s more, this one was pretty inexpensive. Try it if you see it! Original review

#9 – Qi Shi Liu Ren Back To Henan – China

This one was not at all what I expected when I picked it up at a store called Foodyworld up in Canada. The noodle is broad – like biang biang or belt noodle. The broth has a milky way about it – and it’s supposed to be lamb flavored! I guess that what the animal character on the lid is supposed to be. Whatever is going on here, I think Henan must have a seriously great food culture – these were quite good and if I see another from these folks, I’ll go back to them to try again. Original review

#8 – TTL Sesame Oil Chicken With Rice Wine Noodle – Taiwan

The Ramen Rater's Top Ten Instant Noodle Bowls Of All Time 2020 Edition

TTL stands for Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor and indeed there’s a sachet of rice wine in here! Add to that a big retort pouch full of decent sized chunks of chicken, good noodles and garnish, This is definitely a bowl to seek out and try. Original review

#7 – Samyang Foods Samyang Ramen Hot – South Korea

The Ramen Rater's Top Ten Instant Noodle Bowls Of All Time 2020 Edition

A newcomer to the list, however a flavor I’ve known for a while. Samyang Ramen and Samyang Ramen Hot are just plain delicious; a thick and chewy noodle is coupled with a great spicy ham broth which is just sensational. It hit #3 this year on my Top Ten South Korean list. Original review

#6 – Nongshim Tonkotsu Ramen Premium Noodle Soup – United States

Extremely happy about this one – this is super good. This variety is microwaved. The noodles came out just perfect – even a nice chew on them. The broth is a milky and luxuriant tonkotsu – deep and tasty. The nice part is it comes with a spicy sachet, so you can make it spicy or non spicy tonkotsu, depending on your taste/mood. One of the best tonkotsu varieties I’ve had. Original review

#5 – Little Cook Braised Beef Noodles With Tendon & Meat – Taiwan

The Ramen Rater's Top Ten Instant Noodle Bowls Of All Time 2020 Edition

Okay so first off, this is a heavy bowl. There’s a huge retort pouch in here full of beef and beef tendon. The noodles are wide and have a great chew and the broth has a nice flavor. But the start of the show is that braised beef and tendon – it’s perfect and there’s just so much of it. Very impressive! Original review

#4 – Nissin Raoh Kogashi Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen – Japan

Noodles are exemplary – the standard that Raoh always brings with thickness and  a great premium mouthfeel. Broth is very meaty and full with a nice heat level that doesn’t detract from the rich flavors within. Lots of meat and vegetables included. Original review

#3 – Nissin Gyoretsu-no-Dekiru-Mise-no-Ramen (Shrimp Tantanmen) – Japan

The Ramen Rater's Top Ten Instant Noodle Bowls Of All Time 2020 Edition

Talk about amazing. Now, on most of these bowls, you’ll notice I’ve added my own garnishes. I don’t count them in my reviewing – everything is reviewed prior to any additions I make. This is one where I’ve added nothing and just look at it! This one had very good noodles to start off. The broth was a very thick prawn infused decadent flavor spectacle. Then there’s the little crunchy topping and the other garnish they provide and this is just amazing stuff. Wow. Floored. Original review

#2 – Maruchan Oshima x Tanaka Shoten Miso Tonkotsu Ramen – Japan

The noodles are premium – worth the 5 minute wait too. Excellent backbone and strong tooth. The broth is downright voluptuous; imparting a sludginess of rich salty pork flavor but not too oily. The included garnish had a seriously impressive amount of minced pork which was delectable. One of the best bowls I’ve seen from Japan. – Original review

#1 – Little Cook Thailand Green Curry Instant Noodle – Taiwan

The Ramen Rater's Top Ten Instant Noodle Bowls Of All Time 2020 Edition

Wow – I’m so freaking impressed with this one. First, there are two bowls. Peel back the lid of the first bowl and add boiling water. After a short time, you poke holes in the lid and drain the liquid into the second. A sachet of soup base is added and you have a soup with lots of corn and herbs. Next, a huge sachet with chicken and vegetables boasts a great spicy green curry flavor which mixes with the noodle. A really amazing product which is unique and delicious. This is Little Cook Thailand Green Curry Instant Noodle’s third year in the number one spot in a row – congratulations! Original review

Sadly, this is the second time this year I’ve had to add a memorial to the bottom of my list. Early June 30th, my mother passed after a pretty rough ride. In the end, she died peacefully in her sleep. Here’s an interview I did with her when I had family down for review #3000.

Super Spicy… So, how many SHU is this? I’m really curious how it will pan out. There’s only one way to find out! By the way this one seems to only be available in Europe.

#3750: Nongshim Soon Kimchi Noodle Soup - United States

I’ve long been a fan of the Soon line of products from Nongshim. If asked whether I’d want Shin Ramyun or Soon, I’d hit the Soon. Why? It just has a really nice smooth finish (it sounds like I’m describing a beer but really it does). This time they’ve got a trifecta of new versions – kimchi, a spicy tomato and a miso tofu. Today kimchi is on the menu – let’s check it out.

Loose vegetables from the cup.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added marinated egg, narutomaki, chashu, spring onion, pepper flake, and sesame seed. Noodles came out well – I steeped with boiling water instead of microwaving. Generally, microwaving works well too. The noodles have a nice chewiness to them. The broth is slightly spicy and very tangy, kind of the hallmarks of kimchi. The amount of vegetables here is very good – always like to see more vegetables. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 031146033492.

The Ramen Rater's Top Ten Instant Noodle Bowls Of All Time 2021 Edition

Well, it’s been another year of reviews and these are my favorite bowl varieties out of reviews #1 to #3790. All sorts of bowls from all over the world have been tried. It’s been a crazy year and it seems (at least in this neck of the woods) things are starting to mellow which is truly wonderful. It’s been a crazy month too – today is Memorial Day, May 31st, 2021. I’ve walked over 1 million steps this month, and on Friday did my personal record – 33 miles in a day. Yes, my feet hurt. Anyways, if you have varieties you want to see reviewed whether they be bowls, cups, packs or otherwise, please contact me. #3845: Nongshim Shin Black With Beef Bone Broth - United States

I hear it already – ‘but it’s from Korea!’ Look. Just humor me. Look. Lower left. Made in USA. Unless you visited South Korea and brought some back from Canada (they’re probably from their Chinese factory if so), then you’ve been eating Korean style instant noodles made in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Their factory is a really neat place – first one I ever had the fortune to visit and it was really neat.

This is one that I have liked for years and seen it go through many different changes. Today we have a packaging change – and if I’m not mistaken, the beef broth tag is a new thing. Time to give it a try.

Well look at this! I’ve seen something like this before…

#3875: Nongshim ChapaGuri Jjajang Noodles With Spicy Seafood Flavor - United States

I did a post way back in April of 2013, extolling the virtues of Chapaguri! No clue where I’d heard of it back then – maybe from Nongshim, IDK. I’d long forgotten about it and then I saw this and was like ‘hey – that’s the logo I made!’ It’s a pretty easy conclusion to do something like this from a design perspective and I think it looks nice. If they got the idea from me, I’m honored, but I’m guessing they had the idea of it when it was a popular item back then. Well, let’s see how it tastes!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added sauteed beef, marinated egg, spring onion, and sesame seed. A fine-and-a-half minute spin in the microwave was perfect on this one – noodles were perfectly heated. The flavor was predominately jjajang – I would say it was a little more Chapa than Guri and would have liked a little more seafood flavor in it. But it’s an apt combo and I see why people went for it en masse. 4.25 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 031146055333.

Shin Ramyun Bread Experiment v1.0

Shin Ramyun Bread Experiment v1.0

I had a thought – ramen into bread. I was able to do this successfully by creating a bread with cooked noodles as an ingredient in place of some bread flour. But what of a bread where instant noodles are the flour? I mean, it is flour, isn’t it? Today, We’ll look at my initial attempt and see what was learned from it and how it went.

Shin Ramyun Bread Experiment v1.0

The Concept

I got a four pack of Nongshim Shin Ramyun at the grocery store and brought it home. We have a little ‘Magic Bullet’ blender and I figured use that to powderize some noodles. It worked very well – the noodles were absolutely powdered up. I decided a basic white bread recipe would have the greatest chance of success, using scant oil as the noodles were heavy on that.

The Recipe

  • 2 1/2 cups Shin Ramyun noodle block flour
  • 3 sachets Shin Ramyun seasoning powder
  • 4 sachets Shin Ramyun vegetable sachets
  • 4 tsp sugar
  • yeast
  • water
  • oil

The Doings

After everything was loaded into the bread machine, the kneading started. It was evident right off the bat that this was going to be a little bit different. The water was sucked up immediately, logical as these were noodles which were rendered into a fine powder. We kept adding water until it got to the desired consistency. At this point, I figured that the best we could expect was a very sunken loaf which was very dense. As it rested and rose I had high hopes – it looked and smelled kind of like bread! Very promising!

The Documentation

Here’s what happened – from the dough making to the baking, to the finished product.

The Result

Shin Ramyun Bread Experiment v1.0

Finished (click to enlarge). As you can see, it didn’t work. So, what happened here? Well, we got a nice crust, but the innards were like a heavy porridge – thick, dense and sticky – but dough-like.

What the issue here was that all that water had nowhere to go. We figure that the ‘flour’ held onto it and just wouldn’t let it go. Also, if it had, maybe by cooking futher at a low temperature, we don’t think that the center would have become something with the texture of bread but more hard and crunchy. I think that the next try will involved doing this with ooked noodles and bread flour. I had high hopes of a bread made solely out of pulverized instant noodles, but I don’t think it’s in the cards. Nevertheless, nothing ventured, nothing gained – and it was not only fun but somewhat educational as no the fact that this doesn’t work. I knew there were a million reasons as to why this wouldn’t work, so it wasn’t a surprise, nor a setback, but somewhat disappointing.

Rest assured – Shin Bread will rise from the ashes of this experiment – maybe next weekend. In the meantime, here’s a loaf of bread that did work for the most part.

So. If the noodle is fried, an emulsifier is needed to release the oil from the noodle. However, if they’re air dried… Hmmm. Let’s see, then we… wouldn’t? Let’s make this stuff into bread!

Nongshim Shin Light Bread!

Video

Okay so here we go.

Ingredients

  • 1 family pack Shin Light – 4 noodle blocks, soup base from 3 packs, 4 vegetable packs
  • 1 cup bread flour
  • some eggs
  • water
  • yeast
  • green onion
  • cheese

Method

  1. Grind noodle blocks
  2. Find out that’s not enough flour so use the bread flour with it and blend it together
  3. In bread machine add wet ingredients then sachets, then flour, then yeast
  4. Set to BASIC and LIGHT crust
  5. When kneading is happening and nothing is working right, throw in some eggs
  6. When it starts baking, add cheese and onions

Results

Finished (click to enlarge). So this worked about as well as – oh, to heck with it – it didn’t work. Not well, at least. It didn’t rise very well and it ended up kind of gross. I think the chief problem here was that it didn’t get that noodle ground fine enough; instead of a fine powder it was more granulated. Back to the drawing board. Shin Bread will happen, but not today, I’m afraid.

Now I know what you’re thinking. ‘He’s gone mad, The Ramen Rater, he has.’ Not in the slightest. No more than usual, at least. I thought I would try something and see what would happen. Making bread is a lot of fun and I’ve never made any kind of really sweet sugary bread before and kimchi ramen would have a tangy and acidic bump to it, right? Well, so here we are. Tons of candy in the house and a bread machine wanting to make ramen bread. Let’s give it a try!

Halloween Candy Kimchi Ramen Bread #ramenbread

Video

I hope you’re ready to see amazing – because that’s exactly what this is – a big win!

Ingredients

  • 1 pack Nongshim Kimchi Noodles – noodles block cooked and drained & sachets
  • Halloween Candy (I used fun size of the following: Whoppers, Hershey chocolate bar, Twix, M&MS (plain and peanut), Sour Punch Bites) – frozen
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • active dry yeast

Method

  1. Add 3/4 cup water, oil, seasonings from ramen, and sugar to bread machine
  2. Add 1/2 flour, drained noodle, almost other half flour, yeast, and little bit of flour left on top
  3. Start bread machine – used BASIC setting and MEDIUM crust setting
  4. During the kneading process – when its close to done, add in all your candy while it’s still very much frozen
  5. Sit back and enjoy

French Toast

  1. Mix 1 egg, chocolate milk, cinnamon, and sugar in a bowl.
  2. Add a slice of bread for 30 seconds, flip over
  3. Add to buttered skillet and fry – flip it over until done
  4. Add a little syrup

Results

Looks promising and smells kind of like muffins.

A very heavily speckled bread!

Finished (click to enlarge). I figured since it was so sweet it would really make decent French Toast – and it did! This was really interesting stuff. The standout was the Sour Punch Bites which ended up with the flavor of something akin to a raspberry filling you’d find in a doughnut. A truly fascinatinh animal, this is. Enjoy! Experiment! #ramenbread!

#10: Maruchan Creamy Chicken Flavor Ramen Noodle Soup

The Ramen Rater's Top Ten American Instant Noodles Of All Time 2022 Edition

The noodles for this particular variety are just out of this world perfect. They have a decent and very standard gauge and suck up just enough broth. The broth has a very easy going creamy chicken taste, creaminess thanks to non-dairy creamer. Definitely my all-time favorite of the US Maruchan pillow pack range. Original review | Get it here

This one really took me off guard. Made in the United States by a company that usually produces Korean varieties, we have a Japanese standard. Tonkotsu is a pork bone broth and noodle combo that’s very good, and this is honestly one the the best I’ve tried anywhere. It is microwavable and comes with a sachet of spicy stuff so you can have it spicy or not. Just amazing stuff – bravo! The Definitive Guide To Nongshim Shin Ramyun Noodles

Back in 1986, a South Korean company called Nongshim 농심 (which translates to Farmer’s Heart), introduced a product called Shin Ramyun. Since then it has been one of the most popular varieties around the world. In this post, I’ll do a deep dive into the product – a tear down of the package and it’s contents, my tips of preparation, and some things you might not know about it. While not my favorite variety I’ve tried, chances are it may be yours. I run a group called Ramen Junkies on Facebook and the topic and focus of the bulk of posts on there surround this product.

The Definitive Guide To Nongshim Shin Ramyun Noodles

History

Shin Ramyun has gone through a lot of changes over the years, but it’s main recipe has stayed virtually the same. You have a thick ramyun style noodle, a spicy broth, and some vegetables in the ‘flakes’ sachet. There are a few variations that I’ve seen over the years. First was Shin Ramyun Black, a version augmented with Sul Long Tang (oxtail soup) flavor, imparting a more savory flavor. Other iterations include a Shin Ramyun Spicy Mushroom flavor, Shin Ramyun Shrimp flavor, Shin Black Onion Flavor, and Shin Red Super Spicy to name a few. Recent addition Shin Light has been introduced, with a non-fried noodle which lowers fat content and calories. You can see all my Shin Ramyun varietal reviews here.

Original Shin Ramyun can be found in pillow packs, multipacks, flats, bowls, and cups. In 2021, sales outisde South Korea hit 53.6% overall – higher than inside South Korea. It’s a very popular product around the world, and very easy to find online as well as in stores.

What’s in a name? Shin is derived from the Chinese character which means spicy. The name of the founder of Nongshim’s last name is Shin as well.

Timeline

Here’s some timeline of the product from Wikipedia –

  • Shin Ramyun was introduced in October 1986 by Nongshim. The Nongshim R&D team came up with the idea of Sogogijanguk, a cabbage and beef stew, which is one of the most popular traditional South Korean dishes.[3]
  • After Shin Ramyun was introduced, Nongshim’s market share hit 46.3% in 1987, and exceeded 50% for the first time in 1988 (53.8%).[4] With the market share of over 20% just by itself, Shin Ramyun is a leading brand of the instant noodles in Korea.
  • August 2014, Nongshim revised its recipe for noodle blocks across its line for a chewier consistency, along with a revamped external packaging.
  • 2007 Nongshim launched a Kimchi Flavour version of Shin Ramyun.
  • 2019 Nongshim launched a non-fried version of its packet noodle which has almost half a reduction on calories.
  • 2015, Shin Ramyun achieved 28 billion units sold since it was first introduced.[5] Shin Ramyun is listed on the National Brand Consumption Index (NBCI)[6] as the number 1 brand in South Korea (2012~2016) for its brand awareness and brand power

Video

Here’s a video where I prepare the product, garnish it, and consume it. It should be noted that adding cheese is a popular thing in South Korea. It should also be noted that the use of rice to add to leftover broth is very popular.

The Tear-down

The Definitive Guide To Nongshim Shin Ramyun Noodles

The iconic package. This package is produced at Nongshim America’s plant in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Here’s a great video from a tour of the plant you might enjoy. In 2012, my wife and I were invited to visit Nongshim and had a chance to do the tour, seen here. If you live in the United States, this is where you Shin Ramyun is manufactured. It should be noted that there are Nongshim plants in many places – as of 2016, Nongshim has 11 manufacturing plants around the world: Korea (Anyang, Ansung, Asan, Gumi, Busan, Noksan), United States (Rancho Cucamonga, California), China (Shanghai, Qingdao, Shenyang, Yanbian).

Detail of the package (click to enlarge). Shin Ramyun is not Vegan and contains beef (however if you are looking for a Vegan option, I recommend Nongshim Soon – it’s a lot like Shin).

To prepare, boil 550ml water. Add in all package contents. Cooking time can range from 4~5 minutes as per package recommendations. Less time allowisfor a more al dente noodle and longer for a softer noodle.

The noodle block. These fit into a small pot quite nicely.

The soup base sachet. This contains a reddish powder which is spicy and savory.

A sachet of vegetables.

Definitive Guide To Nongshim Shin Ramyun Noodles

Finished (click to enlarge). Shin Ramyun prepared with mushroom, beef, spring onion, processed cheese, raw egg yolk, sesame seed, and crushed red pepper. I usually will mix the egg into the broth which imparts a nice creaminess. Once the noodles are eaten, adding rice is a way to finish things up – if you have room of course – Shin Ramyun is a pretty large serving on its own.

Other Ways To Use Shin Ramyun

Of course, there are other ways to enjoy this product. You can crush the noodles inside the pack and add some of the seasoning. Shake it, and eat it dry as a snack. You can use the seasoning on popcorn. You could make a burger out of it (seen here). I ground up noodle blocks from Shin Light and made ‘bread.’ I’ve also created a Prison Ramen Burrito from Shin Ramyun, albeit not so enjoyable, it was fun.

Where Can I Find Nongshim Shin Ramyun?

Chances are, if you look for it, you’ll find it pretty easily. You can get it on Amazon here.

In Closing

Nongshim Shin Ramyun is most certainly a juggernaut in the instant noodle universe, popular the world over. As I said in opening, in my group, many posts are dedicated to  pictures of what people do with it. While not my favorite product in the noodleverse, it is quite good. Many people try it and just stop. I think what’s important is to keep trying new things, at least for me. My favorite variety is the one I haven’t tried yet, be it good or bad. The experience of trying new things is really what I enjoy. Nothing wrong with having a favorite, though!

#4101: Nongshim Tonkotsu Ramen With Kuromayu Black Garlic Oil - United States

For the longest time, I only thought there was a single variety of Nongshim’s Tonkotsu bowl – the spicy one. Lo and behold, there’s this one with black garlic oil as well. What’s more, I think both exist concurrently. The spicy one has a five star rating from me and is at the top of the USA top ten. Let’s check this new one out!

The noodles come out of the microwave soft but seperate and work well with the broth. The broth is a rich tonkotsu – I will admit I’m much more keen on the spicy version than this one though. The garlic oil is a nice touch. Good for those who don’t like spicy tonkotsu. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 031146058105.

Shin Ramyun & MyKuali Tom Yum Pizzas!

Well, it’s been a long time coming, but here we are. It’s pizza time. I could go into detail to start with, but let me just say – this pizza is wonderful and I’ll tell you how to make it. Probably the best bready thing I’ve ever made. Before we start, let me say this also – if you’re looking for a pizza crust from instant noodles, you will not find that here. What I’ve found is that instant noodles are best as is and not screwed around with too much. A filling for bread, but not part of the dough.  Let’s begin.

Shin Ramyun & MyKuali Tom Yum Pizzas!

Ingredients

  • crust
  • 4c flour
  • 2 tbsp soft butter
  • 1 tsp yeast
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/3c water

toppings

  • pack of noodles & seasoning
  • alfredo sauce
  • spring onion, basil
  • mung bean sprouts
  • chashu
  • anything you want

Method

  1. Add water and other dry ingredients into a bread machine
  2. set for dough and let ‘er rip
  3. get a bottle of alfredo sauce and pour half in saucepan
  4. heat slowly and add in seasonings and stir
  5. prepare instant noodles and drain
  6. put dough into a pizza pan
  7. layer with noodle, then shrimp, mung bean sprouts and basil, then sauce then cheese
  8. bake at 425 for 20-22 minutes

Results

MyKuali Red Tom Yum Goong Pizza

Prior to baking

After baking/slicing

Here’s the MyKuali Red Tom Yum Goong Pizza (click to enlarge). This one ended up a little on the wet side but only a little bit. The alfredo and tom yum paste compliment eachother quite well, tomato and shrimp go nicely as well, and the basil ties everything together.

Nongshin Shin Ramyun Pizza

Prior to baking

After baking/slicing

Here’s the Nongshim Shin Ramyun Pizza (click to enlarge). This one was a little drier as I didn’t use mung bean sprouts and the seasoning wasn’t a paste but a powder. Cheddar worked well here and a lot of spring onion helped quite a bit. Chashu fit well, but I think perhaps ground beef would be nicer.

Stuffed Shin Black Bread!

I know you’re wondering ‘why does he do these things?’ I pose the opposite question – ‘why don’t you do these things?’ I’ll be honest – I’m playing with food. It’s something different to try. Sometimes it doesn’t work, but I’m finding many times it does work and it works pretty well! Let’s make some stuffed bread with a popular variety!

Stuffed Shin Black Bread!

Watch and see – it’s a lot of fun to see what happend!

Recipe

I made the dough in my trusty bread machine – around 4 cups flour, around a cup of water, a little oil, 2 tbsp sugar or so. I added a pinch of salt and some soy sauce – I thought it would make the bread itself a little more savory, however the amount I used really didn’t make much difference. The filling? Boiled a block of Shin Black and drained it. Added to a bed of thin sliced scallion, added in a handful of cheddar cheese, and a glob of alfredo. Of course I added all the Shin Black sachets as well. Baked at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added scallion, sesame seed, some fresh vegetables, a fried egg, ran the blowtorch on the bread, and a little mayonnaise. This was interesting – the noodle mixture seemed to take on a mind of its own – on one hand trying to burst out of the loaf, on another hanging out at the edges. It tasted like Shin Black with a little cheese and alfredo notes and then a scallion punch. It wasn’t bad, but I would recommend maybe doing 40 minutes. The moisture made sections of the bread too moist, and the inside didn’t get done enough on some slices.

Here’s a side shot of the finished product (click to enlarge).

#4214: Nongshim Angry Chapaguri - United States

Well, well, well. I think this one should warrant a mukbang, don’t you? I’m trying to remember the last time I did one, actually. I must say I’m sad to report that this is the first year a top ten list for South Korea has been skipped since I started doing them; I’ve reviewed so few new varieties. Really bummed about that – help! Glad to see a new one here, however this is for the US market and not the Korean version. Hopefully some new ones will cross my desk for 2023 soon. Either way, this is an extra spicy version of Chapaguri, made popular by the film Parasite I believe. Still haven’t seen the film… Being with poor vision, subtitles are a little rough. Definitely would like to see the ramdon scene.  But anyhoo, let’s check this new ramdon out.

Nongshim Angry Chapaguri – United States

Detail of the side panels (click to enlarge). Contains fish. To prepare, add 350ml room temp water to an 8 inch saucepan, along with everything in the pack. Bring to a boil and cook for 5 minutes stirring regularly. Finally, stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

A dry sachet of sauce mix.

The flake sachet.

A sachet of oil.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added spring onion and sesame seed. Noodle is thick with a nice chew to it. The flavor is a nice balanced combo of Nongshim’s Chapagetti and Neoguri products with an extra added heat. It’s spicy, but definitely not in the ultra spicy realm, so accessible by most with a penchant for heat. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 031146060917.
